Sophomore Summit and Financial Reality Fair 2018 was a great success!
On October 4th, 486 Rutland County 10th grade students from seven local high schools traveled to Castleton University where they were introduced to various careers and local business people and completed an exercise designed to give them an understanding of how much it costs to live and how much they will need to earn to afford their choice lifestyle.
Students each selected two workshops from a total of 15. In most workshops there were three to five business presenters representing 52 high-demand, high-paying jobs in the Rutland Region. Featured industry sectors included but were not limited to agriculture, automotive, business, construction, culinary, education, engineering, finance, health care, public safety, social services, and technology.
Many presentations were interactive; allowing students to have some hands-on exposure to a specific career. For example, manufacturing presenters allowed students to try welding and Green Mountain Power toured students around a fully equipped truck.
At the Financial Reality Fair, students were given the starting, net (after taxes and student loans) salary of their chosen job and challenged to create a workable budget. Two Rutland Young Professionals, Erin Anderson and Joshua Lake, graciously shared their personal stories with our students and told them how their careers in Rutland have allowed them to pursue their chosen life-styles (travel, snowboarding, home and pet ownership).
Students made life-style choices, including housing, entertainment/recreation, pets, transportation, TV/phone/internet, fitness, food, clothing, and savings. All of them learned that money doesn’t stretch as far as one would wish and some were surprised to learn that there are good paying jobs that don’t require a lot of student debt.
The RRWIB also acknowledges the help from over 50 Reality Fair volunteers, more than 50 local business presenters and 15 RRWIB members that introduced panelists and helped with foot traffic.
