Castleton, Vermont October 5, 2017
The Rutland Region Workforce Investment Board is working with the high school counselors from Fair Haven Union High School, Mill River Union High School, Mount St. Joseph Academy, Otter Valley Union High School, Poultney High School, Proctor High School, West Rutland High School, and Rutland High School to organize the sixth annual Sophomore Summit. Sophomores from all around Rutland County will meet at the summit to discuss important issues surrounding financial literacy and attend panel sessions designed to give the tenth graders an opportunity to explore career choices. Panelists generously donate their time and represent more than 60 industries. 26 career pathways are available for students to choose from.
This will be the third year that the summit includes a Financial Reality Fair sponsored by Heritage Family Credit Union and the VESCU. Students are given a budget based on the average starting salary in their chosen career path and then they experience the realities of budgeting by making purchases at the fair. The purchases are based on typical needs such as living arrangements, food, transportation, entertainment and savings. At the end of the fair there will be a debriefing that covers credit ratings, financial planning and reflection on wants versus needs.
This event is held at Castleton University from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm and will be attended by approximately 600 sophomores. The event is made possible by generous sponsorship from the following local businesses: Heritage Family Credit Union, Carris Reels, Omya Inc., Rotary Club of Rutland, Lake Sunapee Bank, Rutland Regional Medical Center, Vermont Country Store, and VSECU.
